Summary
When acute lyeloid leukaemia (AML) comes back after treatment, it is often because some leukaemia stem cells are able to survive chemotherapy. One reason these cells survive is that they make too much of a protein caleld BCL-2, which helps cancer cells avoid dying.
Venetoclax is a targeted medicine that blocks BCL-2. By blocking this protein, venetoclax can help cancer cells die the way they are supposed to.
This clinical trial is for children, teenagers and young adults who have:
- AML that has come back for the second time, or
- AML that has come back for the first time but cannot be treated with more anthracycline chemotherapy.
Participants are randomly assigned (by chance) to receive either:
- Venetoclax + strong chemotherapy, or
- Strong chemotherapy alone
for the first two cycles of treatment.
After these two cycles, if they are eligible, participants will either proceed to a stem cell transplant or continue with maintenance therapy (which differs by study arm).
